Didsbury Career High has the unique opportunity to raise rainbow trout from eggs to fry. This project is in cooperation with the FINS Program (Fish in Schools) offered by the Bow Habitat Station at Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.During the first week of February, one hundred eggs will be delivered to our school. We will have the opportunity to view the hatching of the eggs and then watch the alevins dive for cover. By about mid March the fry fish will begin swimming up to the top of the aquarium to be fed. In the first week of June, we will release the fish into a local body of water, with the assistance of a provincial fisheries biologist. Our Career High students will quickly come to the understanding that survival of their fish depends on their ability to maintain a healthy environment in the aquarium. The project will also provide our students with first hand knowledge of the elements of good fish habitat, fish conservation and the fish life cycle.
